It has been a long history for monograms since they first appeared in coins way back in 350 BC. The first known examples are names of Greek cities used on coins, usually the first two letters of the city’s name.

Monograms or combination of letters representing abbreviations of Jesus Christ were used through the centuries as also monograms of monarchs in kingdoms.

Since then, monograms have been used by artists and craftsmen as signatures on paintings, sculpture and pieces of furniture. It is a different story today. Free monograms are frequently seen on stationery, adorning luggage and embroidery.

In fact monograms are common design elements at weddings. Getting an actual facsimile of a custom-designed monogram is not always easy. Make free monograms. Microsoft Word or PowerPoint can do it for you and if you are creative, Photoshop or Illustrator can also do it for you.

Start by choosing Insert > Textbox. You will notice there are built-in choices. Type and format the letter the way you are fond of it. Do this a couple of times. Next, choose format > textbox and then choose color. Select all letters, right click and choose a ‘group’ to lock-in the arrangement. Copy the image in MS Paint and save in a format example jpg.

Free monograms by using PowerPoint

Again, choose Insert > Textbox, and create letter to your liking. Copy the letters and format them to your specifications. Select all the letters, right click, choose Grouping > Group, right-click on your image and save in any of formats such as JPEG, PNG or TIFF.

Free monograms using Photoshop

Using Photoshop has the advantage of creating monograms in many different styles, easily. Here is how you can do it.

  • Open a blank canvas
  • From the shortcut menu select “Type” tool
  • Set the font to a color you like
  • If you are creating a couple’s monogram, spell out both the first names
  • Add a new layer by choosing the small page icon on the “layer palette” menu

When you have finally created the monogram, adorn it by adding other items in coordinating colors. You can change the fonts by making text layer active.

Monograms have always been part of history and culture. The common monograms we are all accustomed to, have three letters. The three letters identify the first, middle and last names.

Of late, the most popular monograms have been on keepsake items, especially jewelry. Monograms on women’s handbags are also fashionable. Some of the very popular examples are champagne glass sets with matching monograms for brides and grooms for toasting during the wedding.
